Description

Civil Society Academy, Welthungerhilfe and Impact Hub are inviting submissions of ground-breaking innovations to tackle hunger and social injustice, for the Social Innovation Challenge for 2019. Innovators will need to apply to any 1 of the following 2 challenges:

  • Challenge 1: How might we support rural women and their families to access public services that truly help them escape hunger and injustice? Solutions that the organizers are looking for include:

1) Support vulnerable women improving their awareness, access and quality of services and help ensuring their rights at the local level;

2) Improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of state services;

3) Provide radical alternatives to current models of service delivery.

  • Challenge 2: How might we support social activists and concerned citizens to become more powerful in combating hunger and injustice? Solutions that the organizers are looking for include:

1) Magnify the voice of concerned citizens, social activists and their constituency to influence state policies at all levels;

2) Provide radical and effective alternatives to existing advocacy or campaign methods;

3) Support the international community in developing and enforcing global standards related to hunger and injustice.

Applicants do not need to submit sophisticated proposals. All they need to do is pick a challenge, answer a few questions and submit a 3-minute video or a mood-board that illustrates their passion and creative skills.

The organizers believe that innovation and funding for disruptive ideas are the only ways to achieve Zero Hunger and Social Injustice.

Benefits

In May 2019, innovators selected from the applicants will participate in a 4-day Design Workshop. Airfares or train fares as well as accommodation will be covered for the innovators invited to the Workshop. The best 8 concepts and innovators will be awarded with up to €3,000 and a holistic support system to further develop the prototypes.

In June 2019 the 8 innovators will undergo 3 months of prototyping, during which they will develop the prototype, design and brand, undergo first field tests, obtain support for their prototypes, determine customer need and emotional resonance and devise a piloting plan. From this phase, 4 innovation concepts will be selected in August 2019 to receive 1-year start-up stipends of up to €40,000 and further support. From then on, the 4 winning concepts will undergo 1 year of piloting, during which they build the pilot team, develop the prototype, build-measure-learn, undergo branding, marketing, and fundraising, and finally make the case for their product/service. Two to 4 innovations should be ready for scaling in April 2020.

Applicants should be creative individuals with a passion for Zero Hunger and Social Justice. They must be doers, who can take ideas forward and at the same time are visionaries with different skills and from different backgrounds.
