Description

The University of Oxford is offering the Recanati-Kaplan Foundation Scholarship to early career conservation practitioners from less economically developed countries who wish to apply for the 2020 Recanati-Kaplan Centre Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU), Department of Zoology, of the University of Oxford commencing March 2020.

This 8-month full-time course consists of 1 month of distance learning followed by 7 months residential training, running from March to September 2020. The Recanati-Kaplan Centre Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice is designed to enhance the skills of early-career field conservationists and field biologists. The residential component consists of taught courses (4 months) and independent research on 2 projects (3 months).

Benefits

The Scholarship covers course fees, international travel to and from the UK, accommodation and living expenses for the duration of the course. The period covered is 1 year.

Eligibility

Applicants for the bursaries must be candidates who attained their qualifications and training from less economically developed countries.

Applicants for the diploma course must possess a minimum of a BSc-equivalent qualification in a biology/natural resources-related field, or in exceptional cases, demonstrated equivalent experience in the field of wildlife conservation practice. Those with, or studying for, a doctorate in the natural sciences, are not priority candidates.

They should have considerable first-hand experience of field work and conservation issues in the developing world (employment for at least 2 to 3 years, or equivalent) and possess an adequate level of spoken and written English. A basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes, in particular Word and Excel, email and internet, is required. Agreement has to be obtained from the employer to allow the candidate time to attend and complete the course.

This postgraduate diploma is meant for those already working in conservation, and also for recent graduates, provided they have gained field experience during the course of their first degree. Although a degree in an appropriate natural science is normally required, exceptions will be given for those who demonstrate equivalent accomplishment and aptitude for field-based conservation, and the potential to study at postgraduate level.

Application

The scholarship application form can be downloaded online and appended to the online application for the Diploma course. The deadline for applications for March 2020 admission is 14 June 2019.
