Description

The University of Leicester is offering the Sanctuary Scholarship to students with refugee or asylum-seeking status who wish to undertake distance learning studies at the Masters degree level commencing AY 2019-2020.

The Sanctuary Scholarship recognises that there are circumstances which make it difficult for people from asylum seeking and refugee communities to access university. These could be people who aspire to study at university but who face obstacles in achieving their goal. Their studies may have been interrupted or they might not have evidence of their previous qualifications or their qualifications are not transferable. These may also be candidates who need additional English language support.

The Sanctuary Scholarship is designed to accommodate these factors.

Courses eligible for the Sanctuary Scholarship are:

  • Diplomatic Studies MA by distance learning
  • Human Rights and Global Ethics MA by distance learning
  • Intelligence and Security MA by distance learning
  • International Relations and World Order MA by distance learning
  • International Security Studies MA by distance learning
  • The Politics of Conflict and Violence MA by distance learning and
  • Security, Conflict and International Development MA by distance learning.

Benefits

The scholarship provides a full fee waiver.

Applicants can be based anywhere in the world as long as there is regular access to the internet. Those living outside the UK are welcomed to apply. Only those who hold an academic offer to study (or are waiting for a decision) and who belong to 1 of the following categories are eligible to apply:

  • An asylum seeker – a person who has made a claim for refugee status.
  • A person who has been granted Humanitarian Protection (HP) or Limited Leave to Remain (formerly Discretionary Leave to Remain) in the UK.
  • A refugee – a person who has been granted refugee status by the UK Home Office.
