Applications are invited for Durham Doctoral Studentships programme for the year 2019. International students across all of the faculty’s departments and schools can apply for a Durham Doctoral Studentship.

The aim of university is to promote the highest standards of individual behavior and personal accountability, and value social responsibility as a University and in our external partnerships.

Durham University is distinctive – a residential Collegiate university with long traditions and modern values. They seek the highest distinction in research and scholarship and are committed to excellence in all aspects of education and transmission of knowledge.

The University accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Proficiency (CPE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic as preferred English Language proficiency tests.

Scholarship Description:

  • Application Deadline: January 9, 2019
  • Course Level: Studentships are available to pursue doctoral degree programme.
  • Study Subject: Scholarships are offered in diverse fields to help students in upgrading their education.
  • Scholarship Award: Durham Doctoral Awards are tenable for three years full-time or five years part-time, and offer the following financial support package:
    1. an annual maintenance allowance at Research Council rates;
    2. fees at overseas rate.
    In addition, departments may be able to offer paid teaching and/or research assistance opportunities.
  • Number of Scholarships: A limited number of Durham Doctoral Studentships.
  • Nationality: International students
  • Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • Eligible Countries: International students are eligible to apply.
  • Entrance Requirements: They are looking for candidates with the following:
    1. a first-class or very good 2:1 undergraduate degree;
    2. an MA (completed or in progress) in a relevant subject area at distinction or near- distinction level;
    3. an outstanding academic record and research potential;
    4. a high-quality research project that can be completed within 3 years;
    5. a clear and credible link between the proposed research and the expertise of the supervisory team;
    6. a clear understanding of how the project fits with the research environments in which it will be carried out (you may wish to comment here on the relevance of the department, centre or institute).Applicants from anywhere in the world are eligible for Durham Doctoral Studentships. Home/EU applicants to Durham should not apply for a DDS; instead they should for an AHRC Northern Bridge studentship.
    Northern Bridge applicants at Durham will automatically be entered into the DDS competition as well. Students from outside the UK/EU are not eligible to apply to Northern Bridge.
    To be eligible for a Durham Doctoral Studentship, you must have applied to one of the Faculty’s departments or school for the 2019–20 academic year.
    *Please note: that the award cannot be deferred and it is assumed that successful candidates will start in October 2019.
  • English Language Requirements: The University accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Proficiency (CPE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic as preferred English Language proficiency tests. All qualifications must normally be taken within two years of the start of the academic programme (except where an extension applies, please see footnote below for details[1]) to meet the academic requirements of the University.
    Preferred Tests:
    a. IELTS: 6.5 (no component under 6.0)
    b. TOEFL iBT (internet based test): 92 (no component under 23)
    c. Cambridge Proficiency (CPE): Grade C
    d. Cambridge Advanced (CAE): Grade A
    e. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English at Grade C or above [not normally acceptable for students who require a Tier 4 student visa]
    f. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language at Grade B or above [not normally acceptable for students who require a Tier 4 student visa]
    g. GCSE English Language at grade C or above
    h. Pearson Test of English (overall score 62 (with no score less than 56 in each component))

How to Apply: The mode of application is online. To apply for Durham Doctoral Studentship applicants need to complete the University’s online application form and state that they wish to be considered for the award when the form asks them how they intend to fund their studies.
